  • True Life: 25 Weeks

    Splendid Cardigan

One of the most comfortable pieces I’ve purchased so far in this pregnancy is from the very company known for soft fabrics and ultimate comfort – Splendid. It’s one of the non-maternity brands we carry at Belly Dance and we love that we can continue to find great items that work well for both our pregnant and post-pregnancy customers. This double-layer thermal hoodie is cozy and warm with a long-sleeve tee underneath, but it will also serve me well in the warmer months (when my little one arrives) over a nursing tank. We carry it in black and grey in both of our stores, and it will be up on our website soon!

    Free People Pull Over

Free People Engineered Pullover in Charcoal (sold in our stores), Ingrid & Isabel Belly Leggings, J.Crew Factory boots

These weeks sure are flying by. It’s hard to believe I’m nearing the third trimester, and that means almost to baby! There’s one clothing item that I’m wearing more and more as I continue to grow – the Ingrid & Isabel Belly Leggings. They are a great over-the-belly staple (yes, they come all the way up to your bra line!) that are sooo comfortable because they never fall down and don’t have a tag that could irritate itchy skin. Having the extra coverage over my belly has also been a lifesaver in this perpetually-below-freezing winter we’ve been having in Chicago. If you’re looking for a great pair of leggings, I highly recommend giving these a try!

    craving blog - juice 2

Pregnancy and cravings go hand in hand - I've been asked countless times over the past few months if I'm craving anything weird or making my husband run out for ice cream and pickles in the middle of the night. Lucky for my husband, I haven't had any truly bizarre 'I gotta have it" moments (yet). I am, however, all about juice and fruit these days. I pretty much have to have orange juice and a banana first thing every single morning. I'm also practicing eating on the go with these squeezable apple sauces - they are so handy and delicious!

How about you? Share any cravings you're having in our comments section! You can also read up on what a few experts have to say about cravings here.

  • Summer Travel Essentials

    Travel Essentials

Tees By Tina Microstripe DressNOM Dylan Maxi Dress NOM Stripe Hailey Dress , Yosi Samra Flats

Klean Kanteen,  Trail Mix Recipie, Ear Plugs

Ah, summer. The time for vacations and babymoons is upon us. Whether you’re flying or road-tripping, let’s face it, traveling as a pregnant woman can be, well, a little more uncomfortable (Aisle seat, please!). We've put together some travel must-haves to help make your summer trips a little more pleasant. Check out our list, and let us know what essentials are in your carry-on!

    1. Your doctor’s OK. If you’re planning to travel by air, before booking your flight, check with your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you to fly. She can also recommend simple exercises and stretches to help keep your blood circulating and prevent thrombosis and varicose veins.

    2. A stylish but comfortable dress that won’t wrinkle easily. The NOM Dylan Maxi Dress, NOM Hailey Dress, and Tees By Tina Microstripe Dress are a few of our favorites.

    3. Comfy shoes. Yosi Samra’s Ballet Flats go with everything and will make you feel like you’re walking around in slippers! If you’re prone to swelling or varicose veins, consider packing a more supportive pair of shoes or compression socks to wear when flying.

    4. Lots of water. Staying hydrated is super important, especially when traveling. Bring an empty BPA free water bottle with you and fill it up once you pass through security!

    5. Easy, healthy snacks. A banana and some hearty trail mix will keep you energized and help you avoid the expensive, processed foods that are usually available at the airport or gas stations. We love this trail mix recipe from

    6. Earplugs or noise cancelling headphones for the airplane. For tired traveling mamas-to-be, shutting out the background noise can bring a sense of calm and help you get some zzz’s.

  • Hot Topics: Pregnancy Apps

via Google Play via Google Play

From shopping to eating to photography, these days you can literally find, buy, or track whatever you need right from the palm of your hand.  Luckily for pregnant women, there are a variety of great apps to guide you through the next nine months.

There are apps that offer tools like weekly trackers that let you know what to expect each week of pregnancy and places to store information from your doctors’ visits such as your weight, ultrasound photographs, and fetal heart rate.  Some apps focus on health information like drug safety lists, prenatal exercise, and nutrition guides, while others focus on practical matters like planning for the baby and packing a hospital bag.  And then there are apps just for fun—think shower games you can play on your cell phone!

In addition to the pregnancy apps, we’re excited to see some new apps emerging for women trying to conceive.  One such app, called Glow, currently pending approval in the Apple App Store, is designed to be a fertility tracker slash financial tool for would-be parents.

We love ABC News’ recent list of the 12 best apps covering conception to birth and beyond!

Just remember; most apps aren’t approved or monitored by medical professionals, so always check with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about your pregnancy.

What are your favorite pregnancy apps?

  • Hot Topics: Stretch Marks

“Can you really prevent stretch marks?”

We’ve all been there. Pregnant and terrified of that moment the first stretch mark will appear, we wonder if we should just buy the entire shelf lined with the lotions and crèmes that promise to keep them at bay.

The truth is, while there’s no magic lotion that can guarantee you won’t ever see a stretch mark during your pregnancy (they’re hereditary, after all, and whether you get them depends on a whole host of factors), using a stretch mark cream or oil does have benefits. Keeping your belly ultra-moisturized from the beginning of your pregnancy helps skin stay pliant and can help minimize the appearance of stretch marks. It can also reduce itching caused by ever-stretching skin.

Finding products that are safe and effective is key. Here are some of our favorites:

    Belli Elasticity Belly Oil

A Belly Dance best-seller, Belli’s Elasticity Belly Oil is packed with Vitamin E, Gotu Kola extract, and cocoa butter to hydrate your belly and decrease the risk and severity of stretch marks. Lavender and sweet almond oil calm the senses and nourish and moisturize the skin.

    Matter Company Substance Belly Jelly

We love Matter Company’s holistic approach to skincare, and many of their ingredients are certified organic. This soothing balm is made up of six essential oils—including shea butter, lavender, and evening primrose—rich in Vitamin E, which promote skin elasticity and help stop itching.

    Basq Advanced Stretch Mark Butter

Loaded with omega rich oils, essential fatty acids, shea, and jojoba, Basq’s buttery stretch mark cream can help heal existing stretch marks while preventing new ones from forming.

    Bella B Tummy Honey Butter

This light, fresh butter is full of cocoa and shea butter and aloe vera to soothe itching. Bonus: many of the ingredients are organic!
